The start of something new
December 2013 was a busy month and one of the significant milestones was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between me, Chief Constable Andy Bliss and our respective numbers in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, in which we commit ourselves to further collaboration.
Ultimately this work will have a significant impact on how each of the three forces operates, but the changes will result in more efficient and more effective back office functions for each organisation. Importantly, the changes will be a key part of how we protect local policing in Hertfordshire, while at the same time meeting the challenges set by falling funding from Central Government.
However, the agreement was not about who is in or who is out. It is simply an agreement to move forward together with responsibilities divided up between the three Chief Constables. We now know what direction we are heading in however there is a large amount of ground to be covered before the detail will be known.
I know that many police officers and staff, and the many partners we work with will be keen to know more details about the changes and what they will mean for Hertfordshire. We will be working through the specifics over the next few months but as I take stock at the start of this new year I look forward to the opportunities on the horizon. Throughout all these changes, I am committed to ensuring that Hertfordshire Constabulary continues to be one of the best Forces in the country; making Hertfordshire a safe place to live.
At the start of what is sure to be an exciting year, I wish you all a very happy and safe 2014.
