Hertfordshire's crime fighting website Citizens' Academy takes off
More than 2000 people have swotted up on the latest information and top tips in crime prevention by logging onto the Citizens’ Academy in its first month of going live. Hosting free crime prevention advice and interactive tools, the website gives people in Hertfordshire targeted information to help keep themselves and their property safe.

The site, at www.hertscitizensacademy.org hosts a range of interactive learning material including; e-learning modules based around specific crime types, case studies and video clips from crime prevention officers after which users can test their knowledge using the website’s online quizzes. Successful completion of the quiz allows users to download certificates celebrating their achievement.

Over 400 online quiz modules have been taken to date, with Burglary proving the most popular followed by Fraud and Cybercrime, Personal Safety and Theft. Nearly sixty per cent of those visiting the site are aged 18-34. The website’s YouTube channel which hosts advice clips from crime prevention officers has already had over 800 views.

New modules will be added to the website on key topical areas following feedback from the public. Users are welcome to share what sort of crime topics they’d like to know more about to generate future modules to keep the site fresh.

Following successful pilot schemes in key districts, the figures are encouraging to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner who oversee the creation and running of the site. Dr Amie Birkhamshaw, Head of Policy and Engagement at the OPCC said:  “Even at this early stage the figures suggest people in Hertfordshire are willing and keen to engage and learn the latest ways to protect their homes, data, personal belongings and keep themselves safe. Crime prevention can be a proactive stance – securing our property and belongings really is ‘Everybody’s Business’.

“Whilst Hertfordshire remains one of the safest counties to live with low levels of crime, keeping Citizens’ Academy refreshed with new topics and modules is part of our on-going commitment to offer the latest information to help prevent crime before it has the opportunity to take place.”
